Youth and Family Development
The league and its teams and players have a commitment to making sure that children and families worldwide have the necessary safe places and resources to fulfill their dreams. In an effort to support their development, NBA Cares supports this commitment by creating places where kids and families can live, learn or play, such as libraries, computer rooms and basketball courts. NBA players encourage kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and use the game of basketball is used as a tool to teach valuable life skills such as sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, and more.
These Live, Learn or Play Spaces, including new and refurbished basketball courts, libraries, playgrounds, homes and technology rooms, are created in conjunction with NBA league and team community and business partners. These spaces provide the critical resources that pave the way for children’s future success.
The league’s health and wellness initiative, NBA/WNBA FIT, encourages physical activity and healthy living through events, programs and products for children and families. Learn more about how you can get involved starting today!
The Boston Celtics Stay in School program, presented by Arbella Insurance, is a collaboration of efforts from the Celtics, the New England Sports Museum, the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society and the Boston Public Schools. The 2009-10 season marks the 19th year of the Stay in School program.
The Knicks Poetry Slam program gives away over $350,000 in grants, scholarships and prizes while reaching over 10,000 students through school visits, poetry slam open auditions, a college fair, workshops and poetry slams. The Knicks Poetry Slam program provides an opportunity for high school students to express themselves through the written and spoken word and compete.
The Presbyterian Hospital Community Care Cruiser, supported by the Bobcats, is a 40-foot recreational vehicle converted into a mobile clinic that brings basic health care, screenings, immunizations and counseling to underserved communities across the Charlotte-area.
Thunder Fit is part of the overall NBA Fit initiative. Thunder Fit consists of interactive fitness clinics primarily targeting middle school students. Activities focus on strength training, cardio/basketball drills, core training and nutrition. The goal is to show students fun and simple ways to lead healthier, active lives.
