Live, Learn or Play
The NBA’s commitment to youth and family development is highlighted by the creation of Live, Learn or Play Spaces. These new and refurbished basketball courts, libraries, playgrounds, homes, fitness facilities and technology rooms are created in conjunction with NBA league and team community and business partners. Upon completion of each project, NBA family members officially dedicate the project by participating in educational activities and games with the local community. These spaces provide the critical resources that pave the way for children’s future success. Since October 2005, there have been more than 525 of these places created in more than 22 countries. NBA players and coaches spent the afternoon in Ivory Park township in Soweto, South Africa helping to build four houses for Habitat for Humanity. For the local families, these houses were the first they have ever lived in. The NBA has built 9 homes with Habitat for Humanity since 2007.
In partnership with Kelly-Moore Paints, the Warriors unveiled their latest Reading and Learning Center at Visitacion Valley Middle School in San Francisco on August 27. More than 30 students from the R.O.C.K. Program and the school’s basketball team witnessed the ceremony.
As part of the 2009 NBA Finals, NBA Cares and the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a Reading & Learning Center at the Salesian Family Youth Center. Thanks to the combined resources of Toyota Project Rebound, Hewlett Packard, NBA Cares and the Lakers Youth Foundation, the center new carpet, paint, computers, furniture, books and audio-visual equipment.
The NBA partnered with HP, Tata Consultancy Services and the BFI to dedicate its first-ever court refurbishment in India at the Nagpada Neighborhood House in Mumbai in April 2009. The dedication ceremony was followed by a clinic for 75 local youth conducted by NBA Legend A.C. Green.
In partnership with Toyota, the NBA and the Nets teamed up to create the Fun & Fitness Center at East Orange Recreation. Nets players hosted the ribbon-cutting ceremony and joined center members to explore the new room and try out the brand new interactive fitness and gaming equipment.
